Bognor Regis established its first twinning links in 1979 with the French town of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, just 14 km south of Paris. Saint-Maur, situated on a bend of the river Marne, is rich in history and owes its name to an abbey founded in 638 at the place of the “Fossés” or moats. Over the centuries it grew into a market town and today, with a population of about 80,000, is virtually a suburb of Paris with very efficient road and rail links.

Made up of seven smaller districts each with their own individual character, Saint-Maur has much to offer and is the home of many painters and writers. Markets are held in the various parts of the town on most days, with local cafés and restaurants offering typical French food. It is most interesting to walk through old Saint-Maur, with the church of St. Nicholas, the Tour Rabelais within the ruins of the Abbey, and the Villa Medici, now the town museum. Visitors and locals enjoy strolling along the Marne, a tributary of the Seine, which is also used for water sports. There are plenty of opportunities to attend a concert or theatre locally or in Paris.

Apart from the French capital with all its famous sights and attractions, the Bois de Vincennes, Fontainebleau, Versailles, Senlis and Chantilly are within easy reach and Saint-Maur makes a perfect base from which to explore other areas, such as Champagne.
